When I got accepted to go as part of a media team to GIN Manila, I jumped at that. I’ve always wanted to be apart of something like this. Over the past years, I have been doing JUMP! training, which is cool, but sometimes, I like to do something different.
We woke up on Friday morning and got on the plane at 6:20. Once we arrived, we drove to the hotel, and finally, we arrived at the school. We all met up in the Little Theater and played an icebreaker called Two Truths and A Lie. We normally play this at school so we understood the mechanics, but since some people didn’t come from where we were, we had to explain it to them. Throughout the day, we learnt more about the Sustainability Compass and how everything relies on and relates to the Compass.
As part of the media team, you notice more. I’ve noticed that when the other students came through the doors, they felt unconfident, but when working with the facilitators of GIN, everyone is just so casual with each other.
During Day 2, we were assigned to a local service site. I went to a service site called SPECS. We all gathered supplies that could help this service site. I went to a children’s home for boys, where we interviewed a few people and played with the kids. We gave them the supplies, and I really enjoyed seeing the children so happy even though they don’t have a lot.
I think that working with amazing people for GIN conferences is an amazing opportunity to make new friends, find out more about what you could do to help the world, and learning more about yourself.
